Driss speaking about Islam
Hola chicos
A new year means new opportunities!
We’re excited to share that in 2026 we added for our teenagers on Thursdays.
While English remains an important focus, we also want to strengthen the cultural exchange aspect of our program. That’s why we’ll now be hosting one class per week in Spanish dedicated to exploring different cultures, subcultures, and religions from around the world.
Our very first cultural class was prepared and presented by one of our new volunteers, Driss. As a Muslim, Driss was happy to share more about his religion and what it means to him personally. It was a successful event for everyone involved.
For Driss, it was the first time giving a presentation in Spanish, and he did a great job! The students already knew a few things about Islam, which was a pleasant surprise, but they were especially interested in learning more about traditions such as Ramadan and the Hajj.
In Colombia, the most common religions are Catholicism and Christianity, alongside Indigenous spiritual traditions. Islam is not very common, so classes like these help broaden perspectives and encourage tolerance and understanding toward people from different religious and cultural backgrounds. It was also a wonderful opportunity to connect and realize that, despite our different beliefs, we share many common values.
Thank you, Driss!
Next week, Lara will be leading a class about feminism in Germany, we’re looking forward to it!
